Maximizing wire-to-water efficiency is one of the best ways to reduce energy costs, improve reliability, minimize downtime and extend pumping system life. Rather than focusing only on pump efficiency, wire-to-water efficiency evaluates the performance of the entire system—from the power source to the water delivered.

Select the Right Pump

Choose a pump that operates as close as possible to its Best Efficiency Point (BEP). Reviewing the Pump Efficiency Index (PEI) and pump curve helps match the pump to the required flow rate (GPM) and total dynamic head (TDH).

Operating too far from the BEP can lead to:

  • Increased vibration
  • Cavitation
  • Excessive heat
  • Premature wear
  • Higher energy consumption

Online tools can assist in pump sizing.

Choose an Efficient Motor

Motor selection plays a major role in system performance. Premium-efficiency motors verified by organizations such as NEMA and the Hydraulic Institute help reduce energy losses.

For many groundwater applications, permanent magnet (PM) motors offer additional advantages:

  • Up to 20% lower energy use
  • Higher efficiency
  • Smaller wire requirements
  • Lower installation costs

Improve Performance with a VFD

A variable frequency drive (VFD) improves efficiency by matching pump speed to demand. By reducing motor speed when full output is not required, VFDs can significantly lower energy consumption while reducing mechanical stress and extending equipment life. Many also include motor protection, diagnostics and monitoring capabilities.

Don't Overlook the Rest of the System

Efficiency depends on more than the pump and motor. Properly sized pressure tanks reduce excessive cycling, correct wire sizing minimizes voltage drop, and larger pipe diameters can reduce friction losses and total dynamic head. These improvements can lower horsepower requirements, operating costs and long-term energy consumption.

Consider a Complete System

Using pumps, motors, drives, controls and accessories from a single manufacturer can simplify design, improve compatibility and streamline future service. Manufacturer sizing tools can also help identify the most efficient system configuration.

Build More Efficient and Reliable Pumping Systems

Optimizing the complete wire-to-water system reduces energy use, minimizes downtime, lowers maintenance costs and improves long-term performance. Taking a system-wide approach helps installers and engineers deliver more efficient, reliable pumping systems for years to come.
